Mahamutsa is last man standing Posted on 05 February 2010 - 17:00 A 'rollercoaster ride', this the best way to sum up Orlando Pirates' 2010/11 Absa Premiership campaign. The Mighty Buccaneers have endured many ups and downs this season -- and many players have been used in the process as Rudol Krol has had to deal with suspensions, injuries and players losing form.
Bucs, like most clubs in the PSL, have played 25 league games this season. That is a total of 2 250 minutes of football played.
Very few players have been able to withstand this gruelling PSL season and justifiably so, considering that the calendar has been squeezed into seven months.
Except for one player!
Right-back Rooi Mahamutsa has made 25 successive league starts for the club. The ever-present 27-year-old is now the only player in the club to have played in all the club's matches following Jele’s one-match suspension, which ruled him out of the game against SuperSport United on Wednesday.
“It’s a great achievement. I am very happy at the prospect of playing my 26th straight league match," Mahamutsa told Orlandopiratesfc.com.
"I am looking to play as long as my legs can carry me.
He added: "We still have five league games to complete the league, and then there is the the Telkom Knock-Out and Nedbank Cup.
“I think I have made good progress, but as much as it’s nice to set personal goals, nothing will make me happier than seeing my contribution benefit the club at the end of the season. Only then will I be entirely pleased.”
Mahamutsa, who registered an impressive 28 matches to his name in his first season in the PSL in the last campaign, revealed that his omission from the South Africa Intensive Training Camp, held by Carlos Alberto Parreira last month, has inspired him to work even harder.
“To be honest, I was disappointed for missing out on the oopportunity to be part of the World Cup training camp after being so consistent at my club.
"However, I am not discouraged, because all this means is that I must work harder. That's what I'm prepared to do.
“There’s still a lot to do for Pirates. This is my primary goal and then the rest will follow. At the moment I am fully focused on giving my best for the club and that involves winning the remaining games of the league, starting with the away match to Wits on Saturday," he concluded.
