Key Battles: Zim vs Zim
Posted on Thursday, April 21, 2016 - 12:42
Football is of course a team sports, but there are many smaller battles that are played within that add that extra excitement. These individual battles are subplots which add spice to the larger dish.
When Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns take to the field on Saturday evening, we will see some of the country’s top players battling it out across the Lucas Moripe Stadium pitch.
Of the many subplots that will unfold on the night, there is one which will have a little bit of international flavour, Zimbabwean flavour to be exact.
On the one corner you have a PSL Player of the Season heir apparent in Khama Billiat. And on the other corner, you have arguably the hottest striker in the league in terms of current form in Tendai Ndoro.
Both players hail from Zimbabwe and both of them are in the form of their lives. Billiat who forms part of the “B” in the CBD attacking trio that has terrorised defences this season; has scored 10 goals so far this season and registered an astonishing 16 assists.
The Mighty Buccaneers have registered seven victories in their last eight matches and if you look at the goal scorers for those matches, one name stands out… Ndoro, Ndoro, Ndoro, Ndoro, Ndoro, Ndoro, Ndoro, Ndoro, Ndoro.
That’s right, the name appears nine times. Ndoro has been in fine form since 21 February; coming off the bench in the league match against Mpumalanga Black Aces to set up a goal and score in a 3-1 rout.
He has been a regular since that match, and has repaid the faith the coach has shown in him by scoring with much regularity. To date Ndoro has scored nine goals in his last eight matches.
So who wins in a head-to-head battle between these two talented Zimbabwe internationals? Orlandopiratesfc.com tries to unpack it…
Flair & Skill
For this section we believe Billiat edges his countryman. Skill and flair are Billiat’s main strength. In the absence of height, he uses skill and flair to beat defenders. (Ndoro 0-1 Billiat)
Consistency will be hard to judge simply because the one player has been a regular in his team while the other has only been handed a fair chance to play only this year. In terms of overall consistency, Billiat has been one of the most consistent performers for his club over the last two seasons. Ndoro has been consistent since getting a run and hasn’t looked back since. For this section we give both players a score so it’s a draw. (Ndoro 1-2 Billiat)
10 goals so far this season is a great return for someone who isn’t an out an out striker however, when it comes to goal scoring, Ndoro pips his countryman simply based on goals scored per chances created ratio. It has taken Billiat more games and much more chances to net his 10 goals and far less games and chances for Ndoro to net his 9 goals. (Ndoro 2-2 Billat)
He may be small in frame but Billiat is definitely not a pushover however, we believe Ndoro still wins it when it comes to this department. What Ndoro may lack in speed, he makes up for it in his physical presence. (Ndoro 3-2 Billiat)
No contest here. Billiat wins it, no need not say more. (Ndoro 3 – 3 Billiat)
Who has the Big Match Temperament? Well for us at Orlandopiratesfc.com we believe this is a draw. Both players have shown even at their previous clubs that they can rise to the occasion of the big games. Ndoro did it most recently for the Mighty Buccaneers when he netted a brace against perennial rivals Kaizer Chiefs. (Ndoro 4– 4 Billiat)
It’s a draw! Ndoro 4-4 Billiat. But unfortunately or fortunately – depending on where you stand, this is the only draw because on Saturday there will have to be a winner, who that winner will be? Will unfold on Saturday evening when the Mighty Buccaneers lock horns with Masandawana.
