Bucs draw against City

Orlando Pirates were not able to win at home against Polokwane City who held out for a 0-0 Absa Premiership draw at FNB Stadium in Soweto on Wednesday.

There was not much to write home about inside the opening ten minutes of the game, but then Thabo Qalinge fired a shot just past the upright following a good passage of play.

Polokwane City then went on the attack as Randy Ngobe managed a shot at goal from the left, which had Brighton Mhlongo at full stretch, but the shot went wide.

On the half hour mark Pirates thought they may have had a penalty shout when Luvuyo Memela was bundled over by George Chigova as he chased down the ball, but the referee was not interested in any penalty claim.

Inside the final fifteen minutes of the first half, Bucs’ Memela cut through the Polokwane midfield and fired in a shot at goal but Chigova saved. Makola tried to make the most of the rebound, but could not make it count.

Just before halftime the visitors had a good chance, which hit the woodwork. A corner taken by Sipho Jembula found the head of Mfundo Phungwayo, but his attempt hit the crossbar.

Pirates started the second half on the attack with Qalinge and Nyauza very involved, but Polokwane managed to keep out the danger for the first ten minutes of the stanza.

Pirates looked to be close to the opener when Mpho Makola got on the end of Patrick Phungwayo's angled pass, but he passed to Tendai Ndoro inside the area and sent the ball just behind the in-form striker.

With fifteen minutes left on the clock, Brighton Mhlongo did well to fist away a Cole Alexander free kick after Ayanda Gcaba had conceded a foul as the game looked headed for a draw.

Inside the final minute of the game, Polokwane’s Thobani Mncwango hit a dangerous looking shot at goal. Mhlongo fumbled the ball, but the visitors could not take advantage.

There was one last chance for Pirates when Rakhale hit a half-volley attempt over the crossbar in the dying moments of optional time.
