Eric Tinkler: This will be a hard fought battle

Posted on Thursday, May 19, 2016 - 15:44

After a long 2015/2016 season, The Buccaneers’ fate in the Top8 is still uncertain with just one match to go. Orlando Pirates is scheduled to face off against Supersport United at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday, 21 May 2016 with an afternoon kick-off at 15h00.

OPFC.com was on hand this afternoon to speak to the Eric Tinkler about the final match of the Absa Premiership this season.

OPFC.com: Afternoon Coach, one more match to go?
Eric Tinkler (ET): “Yes, it’s going to be a hard fought battle for a Top8 finish. We are sitting on the 7th position at present and they are two positions below us in the 9th spot and it is obvious that they will want to get the three points on offer come Saturday in order to sneak into the Top8. We on the other hand will obviously have to match them for effort in order ensure that the result goes in our favor and cement our Top8 position”.

OPFC.com: Approach to the match?
(ET):
“I expect a tough game from Supersport United, they will come here looking for a win because the only way they can get to finish in the Top8 is if they win all three points, which in a way makes this match a final before the final.”

“We also can’t afford to sit back either, we will have to play our natural attacking game because it is vitally important that we win this encounter. It’s no secret that whoever wins this final league match will go into the final of the Nedbank Cup the more confident of the two sides which makes it vitally important for us to get a win”.

OPFC.com: Missing Gcaba & Gabuza?
(ET):
“Ayanda Gcaba has been a stalwart in the center of our defense and with him being suspended someone else will have to come in and do the job the job for us”.

“Gabuza came in and scored which was great for the Team as well as his confidence, but he went on to concede a yellow card for a silly celebration and now he is suspended going into this important match against Supersport”.

How much impact will the prospect of the final next week have on this match?
(ET):
“This is a problem, the players will be aware that the final is in a week’s time and my job as the Coach is to make them understand the importance of both fixtures so that they remain motivated for both matches”.

OPFC.com: Thank you Coach and good luck.
(ET):
Thank you.
