Buccaneers off to the Olympics

Earlier this morning the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) announced the team that will carry the nation’s hopes at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. With the eyes of the world firmly fixed on Rio de Janeiro, our country of 14 different sporting codes will take on 206 of the best nations in the world at the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, scheduled to take place from the 5th – 21st August 2016. With close to 10 500 participants from 206 National Olympic Committees expected to compete in 306 events across 28 sports, the city of Rio is expected to live up to its colourful and carnival atmosphere for the duration of the 3-week spectacle.
Following their successful qualification to the games, the National u23 side will represent the country in Group A, where they will face the hosts Brazil (4 August), Denmark (7 August) and Iraq (10 August) where a Top 2 finish will see them play in the Quarterfinals for the first time following their group stage finish in their first and only Olympic appearance at the Sydney 2000 games.
Orlando Pirates would like to congratulate Abbubaker Mobara, Tercious Malepe, Gift Motupa and Menzi Masuku, who are among the 18-man squad selected by Owen da Gama.
The other members of the team include: Jody February, Itumeleng Khune, Ishmael Mngonyama, Rivaldo Coetzee, Mothobi Mvala, Erick Mathoho, Tebogo Moerane, Maphosa Modiba, Deolin Mekoa, Phumlani Ntshangase, Keagan Dolly, Tyroane Sandows, Lebogang Mothiba and Tashreeq Morris.
