Orlando Pirates are drawn in Group A with Jomo Cosmos, Meadowlands Academy and SuperSport United FC in the Engen Knockout Challenge that kicked off this afternoon at Marks Park Sports Club in Emmarentia. The Buccaneers opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory over SuperSport United, before taking on Meadowlands Academy in the late afternoon kickoff.
Prof. Augusto Palacios, was in good spirits ahead of the opening game of the u-17 showpiece, speaking highly of the quality of opposition that the Buccaneers will yet face through the tournament.
“The important thing is that the players enjoy themselves and showcase their talent. While it is important for us to progress as a team, it’s even more important for the players individually to grow their game and also develop as young professionals.”
“You can’t come into these games thinking that one game will be more difficult that the other, because it is in underestimating the opponent that the team will suffer. We respect all teams, and know that they provide a difficult challenge in their own right.”
The preparations have been ongoing, since the turn of the year, and Palacios is motivated to see how far the team has come, with this being their first major test.
“This tournament has been part of our year program, together with the other fixtures that we will play. Its part of our preparation for the future and everyone is ready to do their best and play in the correct spirit of the game”.
The Engen Knockout Challenge will conclude on Sunday 31 July, with the final scheduled to take place at 14H30.
