Orlando Pirates u17 started the season off on a positive note, winning the Johannesburg leg of the Engen Knockout Challenge on the weekend.
The Young Bucs saw off the challenge of Bidvest Wits, winning 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 scoreline in regulation time, at the youth tournament hosted at the Marks Park Sports Club.
There were more positives outside of winning the tournament, where two accolades were given to members of the team. Katleho Cwanyane walked off with the Striker of the Tournament Award, while goalkeeper Kopano Thuntsane picked up the Goalkeeper and Player of the Tournament Awards.
Thuntsane was outstanding, particularly in the final where he scored the equaliser from a well dispatched freekick, as well as pulling off a crucial save in the shootout.
Prof. Augusto Palacios was positive going into the tournament, stating that while it would be great to win, it is of even greater importance that the side gauge where they are in their preparations for the season ahead. A win is a positive start and the side will no doubt be buoyed to continue on from this result.
Congratulations to the boys and the coaching staff, and we wish them everything of the best as they continue with their development.
