MDC Youngsters off to winning start

Posted on Sunday, September 11, 2016 - 20:00

Orlando Pirates have kicked off their 2016/17 Multichoice Diski Challenge season on a winning note.

The young Buccaneers registered a hard fought 1-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns at King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday morning.

Pirates burst out of the blocks and caught the Sundowns defence off guard early on. Grant Peters found himself in the right place at the right time just three minutes in, when he hit a spectacular volley from outside the box past the goalkeeper to give the visitors the lead.

Downs responded well and began to create a few chances of their own. However, a well-organised Bucs defence limited them to speculative long-range chances and set pieces.

Ricardo Lourenco forced a smart save out of the Sundowns keeper late after his powerful low free kick somehow went straight through the defensive wall.

Match ended 1-0

Next up for the Buccaneers is a home match against Free State Stars who defeated Polokwane City 2-1 in a match played at the Charles Mopeli Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Starting XI: Mpontshane, Lechaba, Nyauza, Mtshali, Malepe, Sentsho, Maart, Molaba, Lourenco, Mzila, Peters

Subs: Tsotetsi, Hlongwa, Motebejane, Mpame, Sikhakhane
