Orlando Pirates' high-flying MultiChoice Diski Challenge team lost 1-0 to Maritzburg United in a closely-contested clash at Rand Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Bucs coach David Notoane had striker Grant Peters in his line-up as a goal threat - the young star was listed among the competition's top scorers with two goals to his name.
Attacking midfielder Yusuf Maart had also scored twice, and he started in the number 10 role for the home side.
Pirates were in good form after recording two wins in their opening two matches, but it was Maritzburg who controlled the majority of the contest.
Prior to the game, visiting United had only managed one goal in their first two matches, with Luyanda Ntshangase the man who bagged it in a recent 1-1 draw with Highlands Park.
Ntshangase started up front for the Pietermaritzburg-based side, who almost took the lead in the 15th minute. However, defender Lindokuhle Mtshali reacted smartly to clear the ball off the line for Bucs.
Mlondi Dlamini was in fine form in the first half an hour for the visitors - United's 2015/16 MDC Player of the Season was pulling the strings as pressure increased on Bucs' defence.
However, both teams went into the break at 0-0, with United having the better of the play in the first half.
The momentum stayed with Maritzburg in the second half as they continued to pile forward in numbers. However, it was only in the 70th minute that they made their advantage count.
Lebohang Maboe capitalised to give the away side a deserved lead following their extended period of dominance.
There were few more notable scares as the Team of Choice held on to record their first win of the 2016/17 MDC campaign.
