The Orlando Pirates Learning Centre was host to Sanlam and ASISA Foundation last week for a day of workshops where 50 students learnt about financial literacy.
Managing budgets, savings and managing credit were all on the schedule for the day long course which empowered young people to get to grips with money matters.
“This kind of programme is vital for young people of today as many of the issues dealt with are neglected at school.” Commented Jude Capel the Learning Centre Manager. “School leavers come out of matric not having any skills when dealing with money and credit, then they are overwhelmed with all these offers from outside companies that seem too good to resist,” Continued Capel.
Each of the 50 students who attended the course went away with skills and knowledge about investing and managing their finances along with a useful workbook which details different topics like calculating interest, understanding payslips, golden rules when saving and important numbers and websites where students can get more information.
One of the students, Sabelo Ngubane, had this to say, “The workshop was very useful, I learnt how to budget and about managing my finances. All the topics were explained very well and it helped me to see what mistakes I have been making in the past. I have to be responsible and to run a monthly budget to make my uinds last till the end of the month. It would be great if all students at my school could do this workshop as it really helped with developing my skills in managing money.”
This workshop is another example of how the Orlando Pirates Learning Centre is empowering and helping the youth in the community to develop life skills and use real examples to assist them.
