MDC Update: Its Derby Galore This Weekend

Posted on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 - 10:11

The Multichoice Diski Challenge is set to resume this weekend following a break over the festive season and what a way to resume the 2016/17 season.

Perennial rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs will lock horns on Sunday to battle it out over the bragging rights at the Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton.

There will be a total of six local derbies in this weekend’s Diski Challenge fixtures but there is no doubt which of these (derbies) will be the most eagerly anticipated. Irrespective of log position or form, there’s always excitement when these two sides meet.

The Mighty Buccaneers who are currently in ninth place after nine rounds of matches, trail Amakhosi (who are in fifth place) by only three points. Both teams come into this clash on the back of two morale boosting victories – Pirates winning 1-0 against SuperSport United and Chiefs thrashing Maritzburg United 3-1.

This will only be the second time these two clubs meet in the Multichoice Diski Challenge. Last year, the match ended in a goalless draw despite there being a penalty awarded (missed by Manqele of Chiefs) and Pirates striking the crossbar in the final moment of the match.

Kick off for the clash against Chiefs is 14:00.
