Head Coach Augusto Palacios has been using the mid-season break to fine-tune his side and prepare them for what promises to be a testing second half of the season for him and his charges.
Orlando Pirates are currently in a disappointing 10th place on the log table and will need to start collecting some much needed points if they want to keep up with the leading pack of the likes of SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits.
The Buccaneers have played a total of six friendly matches during the African Cup of Nations break. Yesterday, the Buccaneers hosted Black Leopards for a friendly match at the Orlando Stadium.
The two sides played two 90-minute matches to allow all the players in the squad to get some much-needed game time. For the first encounter, Pirates recorded a 4-0 win with striker Thamsanqa Gabuza netting twice; with Mpho Makola and Riyaad Norodien scoring a goal apiece.
In the second 90 minutes match the Buccaneers kept their foot on the pedal and Tendai Ndoro, who recently returned from Gabon, continued where he left off by netting an impressive hat-trick. The two attacking midfielders Bernard Morrison and Gift Motupa both contributed with one goal each.
After the match, Palacios said: “It’s not about the number of goals but rather the physical condition and the attitude of the players that we are interested in. All the players are focused and you can see it during training and when playing, we are very happy about this.”
