DDC Preview: Cape Town City

Orlando Pirates Reserves dock in the Mother City this weekend for a clash against Cape Town City at Malta Park Sports Complex on Sunday morning.

It’s a match-up featuring two of the teams that were part of a tight race for the title in the previous edition of the DStv Diski Challenge, both finishing the season in the top three.

Form Guide

The early part of the current campaign sees them situated in different halves of the table four games in, with the Buccaneers kicking off the fifth game week higher up in second place while the young Citizens take up the 10th spot.

This is after a commanding start for the Soweto Giants, who remain unbeaten having won three and drawn one game so far, netting 10 goals and only conceding once.

Pirates go into the clash on the back of a three-match winning streak, following back-to-back wins at home against Moroka Swallows and Polokwane City, which came after a 2-0 win on the road against Richards Bay.

They now encounter a City outfit desperate to halt a slide down the standings following consecutive defeats on their travels, where they have let in six goals while finding the net three times.

Their only points of the season thus far came via a 2-0 win in their solitary home game against rivals Stellenbosch on Match Day 2, and returning to familiar turf could prove to be a confidence booster as they look to rediscover winning form.

Head-to-Head

Pirates and City played to a one-all draw in their most recent encounter back in March when Sonwabo Khumalo’s second-half strike cancelled out Jody Ah Shene’s 43rd-minute opener.

It was the latest of a string of tight contests between the two sides, who have produced two stalemates while claiming two wins apiece in their six most recent encounters.

They also stand on equal footing in terms of goals scored, with the 12 goals scored over this period split evenly.
