DDC Preview: SuperSport United

18 November, 2023

Orlando Pirates Reserves head off to Durban this coming weekend where they pay visit to defending champions SuperSport United in their DStv Diski Challenge fixture held at Prince Magogo Stadium on Saturday.

This encounter between the two teams that finished first and second in the previous season will be among the first on show at the festival as the campaign approaches the halfway mark.

Form Guide

There is some distance between the two Gauteng rivals in the standings this time around after contrasting starts to the season.

Higher up on the table are the Buccaneers in second place with seven wins, two draws, and a defeat in their opening 10 games which have yielded a total of 23 points.

Joseph Makhanya’s young troops are currently on a three-match winning streak after seeing off AmaZulu, Royal AM, and TS Galaxy in the past few weeks. This has given them a solid run of results over their last five fixtures where they have come away with four victories, with a stalemate at home to Polokwane City featuring as the blemish to their record in this period.

Looking to extend their streak even further, they face off against a wounded United outfit that’s coming off a defeat away to Cape Town Spurs which saw them drop to 10th place in the standings with only 12 points earned so far. It was their fourth loss in a season where they have won three and bagged a further three points through drawn matches.

Their form has however shown signs of picking up in recent weeks with their three victories coming over their last five fixtures where they have been defeated twice.

A win on Saturday could push them up to the top half of the table, but they are bound to meet some resistance from a Pirates side that has their sights set on top spot.

Head-to-Head

The Bucs Reserves failed to beat their Matsatsansa counterparts last season, where they could only take a single point in the two fixtures between the two sides.

It’s the Tshwane outfit that has enjoyed some success in this rivalry over the past two seasons, where they have won three of the last four clashes, drawing once.

Pirates will go into the game in search of their first win over United at this level since January 2020 when Azola Tshobeni, Simiso Bophela, and Thabiso Sesane all got on the scoresheet to ensure an emphatic 3-0 victory on the road.
