DStv Diski Challenge Preview: Cape Town City

23 September, 2022

Orlando Pirates head to Atteridgeville this coming Saturday, where they will take on their Cape Town City counterparts at Lucas Moripe Stadium in another important DStv Diski Challenge clash.

While senior club football is on hold, the Reserve League continues as it enters its third round of fixtures, where one of the weekend’s headlining acts is the clash between two of the early-season pace-setters.

Form Guide

Both teams remain unbeaten this season after two games apiece, and are perched at the top of the standings going into this particular encounter.

It is the team from the Mother City currently occupying the summit, following consecutive victories against rivals Stellenbosch and Kaizer Chiefs, respectively. They boast an impressive five goals and just two conceded, having managed a clean sheet in their last outing.

They will be in the hunt for another Soweto scalp when they lock horns with the Buccaneers, who had to settle for a point in their most recent fixture - a goalless draw at home to Stellenbosch - despite being the dominant side throughout the 90 minutes.

Pirates’ three goals so far this season all came from their season opener, where they triumphed in their Soweto Derby clash against Chiefs at King Zwelithini Stadium.

They are currently in second place, tied on four points with two other teams, and a win on Saturday has the potential to propel them up to the top of the standings.

Head-to-Head

The two sides faced each other twice inside the space of three weeks in the previous campaign, with the Bucs Reserves emerging victorious in their home leg before playing to a goalless draw away. The win came courtesy of two first-half goals from defender Cassius Spandiel and wing-back Thabiso Monyane.

The Buccaneers are unbeaten in their last three meetings with City, whose last win in this fixture came in September 2019 when they overturned a first-half deficit to win 3-2.

Overall, the fixture has mostly churned out stalemates, with a total of four since 2017, while the two teams boast a single victory apiece during this period.
