DStv Diski Challenge Preview: Richards Bay

6 May, 2023

Orlando Pirates Reserves have another crucial DStv Diski Challenge assignment as they head to Tsakane Stadium for a clash against Richards Bay on Saturday afternoon.

It’s the penultimate weekend of this season’s Reserve League action, and the young Buccaneers’ title hopes remain alive ahead of another must-win encounter.

Form Guide

After a dramatic 2-1 win against Mamelodi Sundowns in Durban last weekend, where Mohau Nkota's injury-time winner brought his side back to winning ways, the Soweto Giants have moved to within two points of table-topping SuperSport United.

This victory comes after claiming just a single point in their previous two fixtures, causing a brief hobble in their charge towards what has been an elusive piece of silverware.

Having tallied up a decent 10 points in their last five games via three wins and a draw, the Soweto Giants will now be aiming to secure two more wins to grab the remaining six points on offer, as they look to finish in the strongest way possible with Matsatsantsa still holding all the aces in what has been a tight title race.

Their first mission will be to see off a Richards Bay side currently positioned in the tailend of the league table in 13th place after collecting just two points in their five most recent fixtures.

The Natal Rich Boys come off a crushing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Kaizer Chiefs, and will be eager to spoil the Buccaneers’ party in Tsakane.

Head-to-Head

This will only be the second clash between the two sides at this level, with the KwaZulu-Natal outfit playing in its debut season in the Reserve League.

Their only previous meeting took place in late January, and it was the Bucs Reserves who emerged victorious with second-half goals from Njabulo Mndebele and Mpumelelo Ndaba handing them a hard-earned 2-0 win.
