DStv Diski Challenge Preview: SuperSport United

22 October, 2022

Orlando Pirates Reserves make their way to Atteridgeville this weekend for a DStv Diski Challenge clash against SuperSport United Reserves, taking place on Saturday morning at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

It promises to be an enthralling encounter with each camp near full strength following the return of players who participated in the COSAFA Under-20 Championship, which concluded in the past weekend.

Form Guide

Two points separate the two sides in the league table, and the Buccaneers currently sit in sixth place six weeks into the new season, a spot below the Tshwane outfit.

This is after being denied maximum points in their last outing, a 2-2 draw away to Royal AM where they had raced to an early two-goal lead before a late blitz by the home side.

Having now gone two games without a win, the Soweto Giants will be looking to improve their early season record, which currently stands at two wins, two draws and as many defeats, bringing their points tally to eight in their six games.

Their search for consistency will see them confront a United side fresh from a hard-fought win on the road, where they scored twice in the last 15 minutes to come out 2-0 victors against Maritzburg United.

It was their second win in their last three matches, where they have collected seven of their ten points collected so far this season, courtesy of three victories and a draw.

Head-to-Head

Each of the two sides has enjoyed a brief period of dominance in this particular fixture, and the Bucs Reserves will be on a bit of a revenge mission on Saturday, following what transpired in the past season.

In their two clashes in the 2021/22 season, it was the young Matsatsansa who came out victorious, winning 3-1 at home before managing a 2-1 victory on the road.

Pirates have also claimed a league double over their Gauteng rivals, which came the previous campaign, where they scored a total of six unanswered goals across the two fixtures.
