DStv Premiership Preview: Chippa United

14 August, 2023

Gqebera is the next stop for Orlando Pirates, who resume league duty with a DStv Premiership fixture away to Chippa United on Tuesday night.

The clash at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is the Buccaneers third in the league this season and fourth in all competitions as they hit the halfway mark of a busy opening month of the new season.

Form Guide

They return to the road following a successful cup outing at home against Sekhukhune United, where they claimed an emphatic 5-0 victory to keep their MTN8 title defence alive as they marched into the semifinals.

That weekend fixture was their second successive home game, and took their goal tally in the season to nine goals after another goal-fest at Orlando Stadium in midweek, which yielded a 4-2 league victory against Royal AM.

With three points claimed in their opening two fixtures in the Premiership, Pirates will be in search of their first away victory this season as they look to climb up from sixth place on the table.

Standing between them and victory is an undefeated Chippa United outfit that has proven a tricky proposition on home soil.

The Chilli Boys will be looking to achieve their first maximum points haul in the new campaign, after playing to two consecutive goalless stalemates in their opening fixtures.

They will not only be looking to add to their goal column for the first time this season, but will eye a maximum points haul that could potentially remove them from the bottom half of the table.

Team News

Pirates could welcome a few players back from injury, with a few members of the Club’s playing personnel making key strides towards returning from action.

Midfielder Katlego Otladisa overcame a minor knock and was an unused sub on Saturday, while Miguel Timm is among those nearing full fitness after returning to training, along with the likes of Kabelo Dlamini and Vincent Pule.

Changes could also be due for Chippa, with the likes of Senzo Nkwanyana and Andile Mbenyane still yet to feature in the current term.

Key Players

Ndabayithetwha Ndlondlo (Orlando Pirates): Having started in all three of Pirates’ fixtures this season, Ndlondlo has repaid the faith shown in him with some outstanding performances. The 28-year-old will be high in confidence, having opened his account with a superbly-taken goal over the weekend to go with two league assists collected in midweek.

Zuko Mdunyelwa (Chippa United): The young defender has seamlessly stepped up to the plate since joining the Chilli Boys two years ago, and has quickly become a regular starter for the club. Mdunyelwa provides safety in his channel through a fearless approach to defending, while also offering an extra outlet on attack.

First-half goals from Kabelo Dlamini and Thembinkosi Lorch handed the Buccaneers a 2-0 victory on their last visit to Gqebera as they avenged a shock home defeat from earlier in the season.

This was the Soweto Giants’ seventh consecutive away win against the Eastern Cape-based outfit, and their 14th win overall in 20 league clashes between these two teams.

Chippa have achieved four victories of their own, with stalemates in this fixture remaining few and far between.
