Buccaneers to Face All Stars in Nedbank Cup Opener

Orlando Pirates will kick off their Nedbank Cup campaign with an all-Johannesburg clash against All Stars FC in the competition’s Round of 32.

The draw took place on Thursday night, with all 16 Premierships teams in the pot along with as many outfits from the lower divisions.

The Buccaneers were drawn as the away team for their fixture against the Championship outfit, setting up a first-ever competitive meeting between the two outfits.

Having already tasted silverware this season, the Soweto Giants will be gunning for another trophy when the prestigious tournament kicks off in February. This is after a disappointing finish in the previous edition, where they were knocked out in the Round of 16 by eventual finalists Marumo Gallants.

Pirates have lifted the coveted trophy eight times in the past, with their first triumph coming in its second instalment back in 1972.

Their last victory came in 2014, and the main objective this time around will be to add to their collection of winners’ medals for the first time in nine years.

The Buccaneers’ opponents return to the Round of 32 stage of the competition, having missed out in the previous edition. They qualified courtesy of a win over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in the qualifying round, avenging their defeat in a similar stage of the competition last season.

The next round of the Nedbank Cup is scheduled for February, with dates, venues and kick-off times yet to be confirmed.
