Bucs Trio Make Final Bafana Squad to Face Liberia

Three Orlando Pirates players have been named as part of the 23-man squad that will take on Liberia in two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers later this month.

An initial squad of 35 players was announced last week, with four Buccaneers included.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos named the final group on Thursday, with three Pirates players making the cut.

Defensive duo Innocent Maela and Nkosinathi Sibisi return to the national setup after both missed Bafana’s most recent friendlies in November last year.

The pair have been automatic picks for Bucs coach Jose Riveiro, and last featured together in national colours back in September when they helped South Africa claim a 4-0 win over Sierra Leone in a friendly match held at FNB Stadium.

They are joined in the squad by attacking midfielder Monnapule Saleng, who earned a spot through some eye-catching performances for the Soweto Giants, netting 12 goals in all competitions this season.

The 25-year-old is retained from the group that did duty for South Africa in friendlies against Angola and Mozambique four months ago.

The trio is expected to link up with the rest of the squad for camp on Sunday ahead of the first fixture taking place in Mbombela on Friday 24 March, before they fly out to Paynesville for the second clash held at Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Stadium four days later.
