A tantalising battle between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will be the headline act in the MTN 8 semifinals, after the two teams were drawn against each other on Monday night.
Following an intense weekend of cup competition, half of the eight teams that had qualified for the tournament made it past the first hurdle, as the Buccaneers booked their spot through a 2-1 victory away to Royal AM on Saturday.
This set them up for a two-legged tie against the defending champions, with the first leg set to take place at Orlando Stadium before the two teams cross the Jukskei River for a decisive clash at Loftus Versveld.
It will be a battle between the two most recent winners of the competition, as Pirates look to reclaim the title after last hoisting it aloft in December 2020, following an impressive cup run where they went past Cape Town City and Kaizer Chiefs, as well as Bloemfontein Celtic, who they overcame in the final held at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The Brazilians, on the other hand, were victorious last year as they defeated City in the final, having seen off Chiefs and Golden Arrows in the opening rounds. They confirmed their place in the 2022 semifinals after a 2-0 win at home to Tshwane rivals SuperSport United on Saturday.
The first weekend of October has been set aside for the opening leg of the semifinals, with the second leg set to take place on the weekend of the 22nd day of the same month.
Kick-off times will be confirmed by the League in due course.
