Students
from Lofentse Girls High School took part in a DigiGirlz Programme at the
Orlando Pirates Learning Centre on Friday, where they received the opportunity
to learn about careers in technology, connect with Microsoft employees, and
participate in hands-on computer and technology workshops.
Female guest
speakers motivated the girls before they had a chance to try their skills in
coding and programming, with Ntobela Botle feeling most inspired by the female
Microsoft employees, who are making headway in a male dominated industry.
“The day was
very beneficial as we were taught about computer science and its advantages. The
programme helped us realise that there are many careers in IT that are
available to us. The most encouraging thing for me was the time spent with the
motivational speakers who understand how tough it is for a young woman to
compete and be recognised in a very tough industry.”
