It has not taken long for some of the new faces in Orlando Pirates’ First Team to make their mark, with Nkosinathi Sibisi joining fellow new recruit Bienvenu Eva Nga in the list of players who have found the back of the net in the early days of the 2022/23 season.
The defender, who completed a move from Golden Arrows during the offseason, has performed admirably in his first two games as a Buccaneer, following up his Man of the Match performance on debut with another solid showing capped off by a goal as he headed in from a corner in the 1-1 League draw away to Stellenbosch on Wednesday.
While his preferred playing position might suggest that he was the unlikeliest of scorers, the player had made popping up on the scoresheet a bit of a habit in the previous campaign, chipping in with some vital goals for his former side.
He did, however, have to bide his time before his first senior goal at Arrows and has revealed that he was grateful that the wait was not as long in Bucs colours.
“It was a great feeling,” Sibisi told Orlandopiratesfc.com. “You know at Arrows it took me a while to get my first goal, so it felt really good to actually help the team. Plus it’s also good to see the hard work paying off. We actually put a lot of work behind our set-pieces at training. It’s always good when it shows on the field.”
Sibisi added that it was a little disappointing that the team could not collect the three points on offer on the day, amid difficult underfoot conditions on a rainy night in the Cape Winelands. He emphasized the importance of bouncing back on their next assignment - a home fixture against Chippa United on Sunday.
“It’s really important that we get three points on Sunday,” he added. “We’re playing at home at Orlando Stadium and if we add a win to the point we got away from home, we’ll be able to find ourselves in a good position.”
Pirates have bagged four points in their two opening League games, and sit fourth in the DStv Premiership standings.
